Review of first day’s events
We kicked off the Shop Local Program on Saturday, November 29th with a successful press conference. Approximately 35 people were in attendance. We thank Borough President Eric Adams, Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblyman Karim Camara and Councilmember Darlene Mealy for speaking and supporting this event. Special thanks to Pia Raymond, Shelly Kramer, Ada Terry, Philip A. Pierre, Beverly Newsome, Dwayne Nicholson, Rosemarie Perry, Veta May Clarke, Pearl Miles, Michael Liburd and Dianna Richardson for all their help.
Through the good work of Councilmember Mealy and Arna Lipkind, a new merchants’ association has been formed with the merchants on Utica Avenue.
In addition to PSL Financial and American Express, we have signed up another sponsor, Carver Bank, which we thank for their community support.
The Shop Local Program is now fully funded from businesses in our community.
Status of upcoming December 13th and 14th
We are holding the main event on December 13th and 14th on Flatbush Avenue, Nostrand Avenue and Utica Avenue. Please support these events by volunteering and shopping local. Through our sponsors, Community Board 9 is providing free food, balloon animals, face painting and giveaways on each of the three avenues. The participating merchants will be offering discounts and maybe we will have a surprise guest.
We need volunteer’s for the 2 event dates, please contact Pia Raymond if you would like to volunteer.
Independent Contractors/Merchants Website
As previously reported, the committee will be creating a website to promote the individual contractors who work and live in our community. Neil Morancie resident committee member has volunteered to lead this activity for the committee. Neil is currently in the planning stages and hopes to have a draft preview of the site in January. We are shooting for a September 2015 launch.
Next Committee Meeting
The committee will meet on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 pm, at the Community Board office. The next meeting will be held on January 5, 2015.
All are welcome to attend and contribute.
